"Instruments are objects that are controllable by humans, but creative AI must have some kind of freedom to decide how to react to your wishes."  – In this insightful interview, Ali Nikrang, a distinguished AI researcher (Musikhochschule München) and musician, explores how artificial intelligence and creativity work together. With his robust background in computer science and a long-lasting passion for music, Nikrang is leading when it comes to answering the question: “How can AI augment artistic expression?”.

In the conversation, Nikrang emphasizes that while AI offers new possibilities similar to traditional instruments, there is a crucial distinction: the human element. He argues that while traditional instruments are entirely controllable by humans, creative AI operates unpredictably, requiring collaboration rather than control.

Nikrang also talks about the idea of AI-created art which he views as inherently a human social phenomenon: "AI can produce data that represents art, but at the end of the day, it is humans who have the intention to produce art."

The interview concludes by discussing the future of AI in live shows: "Even with advanced technologies, we have never replaced human performers on stage because we need the human connection and interaction with the audience."
